Coach: A Complete Guide to the Brand in 2026

Not many American fashion labels are more familiar than Coach, and in 2026 its business is growing at a strong pace. What began as a tiny leather workshop grew into a handbag specialist, and the label today offers clothing, footwear and accessories through stores worldwide. The guiding formula behind Coach has barely changed for decades: carefully crafted leather goods that cost less than those of the traditional European luxury houses. A federal court has characterized that space as accessible luxury, set apart from both mass-market fashion and true luxury.

The roots of Coach, who owns and runs it, the size of the business and what it sells are all set out in this guide. As the difference between a full-price coach store and a coach outlet frequently creates confusion, the guide clarifies that too. The prices given are observed market prices instead of an official price list, and figures are dated to their sources.

From a Manhattan Workshop to an American Label

Coach can trace its history to 1941, when a tiny family-run leather workshop was founded in Manhattan. Six artisans employed in a loft on 34th Street made wallets, billfolds and other small leather goods for men, according to Coach’s own account. Handbags and even the Coach name came later, with the name dating to about 1960 or 1961. The original owners of the workshop were not Miles and Lillian Cahn, even though the couple is sometimes wrongly described that way.

The Cahns joined the business in 1946, and Miles was in charge of the factory by around 1950. In 1961 they bought out the original owners to take control. The idea of adding women’s handbags is reported to have come from Lillian Cahn, and that move reshaped the company. Miles Cahn is credited with creating glovetanned leather, a finish modeled on the way a worn baseball glove becomes softer with wear.

When coschoutlet Bonnie Cashin Refreshed Coach

No designer is more closely tied to early Coach than Bonnie Cashin, the first to serve as its lead designer. Cashin was not a co-founder of Coach, and she is reported to have worked under contract rather than as an employee. The year she started is a small puzzle, since Coach’s own pages give it as both 1961 and 1962. There is no doubt, however, that she kept designing for Coach until 1974.

In Coach’s account, the toggle on the top of her convertible inspired the brass turnlock closure Cashin introduced in 1964. Side pockets, coin-purse details and brighter colors also count among her credited contributions, and they livened up the brand’s look. The turnlock is still one of the most distinctive Coach details, and it appears on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.

Owners, Listings and the Birth of Tapestry

Coach was acquired by Sara Lee Corporation in July 1985. Coach’s initial public offering took place in October 2000, and Sara Lee is reported to have sold its remaining stake the following year. Far from being a mid-century heritage motif, the “C” monogram is a recent addition: Coach launched its Signature collection with it in 2001. On 31 October 2017, Coach, Inc. became Tapestry, Inc., and its stock ticker changed from COH to TPR.

Only the parent company changed its name, while the Coach brand, its stores and its products kept theirs. Coach, Inc. had purchased Stuart Weitzman in 2015, but Tapestry sold that footwear label to Caleres in a deal that was finalized on 4 August 2025. Of the only two brands Tapestry owns in 2026, namely Coach and Kate Spade, Coach is by far the more substantial.

The Capri Deal That Never Closed

Capri Holdings, parent company of Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo, became the subject of a takeover agreement announced by Tapestry on 10 August 2023. Opposition to the deal came from the Federal Trade Commission in April 2024, as it asked a federal court to block the acquisition with a preliminary injunction. A federal judge in the Southern District of New York issued the requested preliminary injunction on 24 October 2024. Although it was not a final ruling on the merits, the injunction barred the companies from closing for as long as the challenge went on.

The court’s decision recognized that an accessible luxury handbag market exists, separate from both mass-market bags and true luxury. On 14 November 2024, Tapestry and Capri called off their agreement, explaining that the legal process was not expected to finish before their February 2025 deadline. The acquisition was never finalized, so Tapestry owns no Michael Kors, Versace or Jimmy Choo business.

Coach’s Leadership Right Now

Joanne Crevoiserat is chief executive of Tapestry, the parent company. Todd Kahn runs the brand itself as Coach’s CEO and brand president, a job he took up on an interim basis in July 2020 and took on permanently in April 2021. The creative lead is Stuart Vevers, whose appointment was revealed in June 2013.

Vevers reportedly unveiled his first Coach collection in February 2014, and he continues as Coach’s creative director in 2026. Reportedly, he spent time at Mulberry and later became creative director at Loewe prior to Coach. Under his direction, Coach has drawn on its archive, reissuing older designs and refashioning vintage shapes into new bags such as the Tabby. His Fall 2026 collection was unveiled on 11 February 2026 at the Cunard Building in New York.

The Numbers Behind Coach

The clearest view of Coach’s scale comes from Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year that ended 27 June 2026. Coach’s net sales grew 24% on the prior year to $6,914.7 million, whereas Tapestry as a whole posted $8,004.2 million. In other words, Coach accounted for about 86% of group sales.

The number of Coach’s directly operated stores stood at 973 at the end of that fiscal year: 336 in North America and 637 in international markets. A total of about 1,299 stores is also cited, but that number includes every store across Tapestry, not Coach alone. Tapestry also said the average unit retail price of Coach handbags rose at a mid-teens percentage rate during the year. The company has tied this gain in part to fewer promotions.

What Coach Sells: Bags, Clothing and Shoes

Handbags remain the heart of the business, and coach handbags today blend structured icons with soft, slouchy leather. Notable launches include the Tabby in 2019, based on a 1970s archive shape, the Rogue in 2016 and again in 2021, and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, in August 2024. After being shown on the Fall 2024 runway, the Empire Carryall went on sale in February 2025. At the upper end, a Rogue 25 in alligator was spotted at $8,000, the highest bag price observed, but the Kisslock Frame Bag, said to have opened the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350. Items in the Coach Originals line are not vintage: the line offers new bags that reissue archive designs.

Ready-to-wear now carries real weight in the offer: coach clothing for Fall 2026 included varsity jackets in leather and in leather with wool, the brand’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats. Flared trousers, blazers and A-line skirts also featured in the same show, as did floor-length high-collar dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. For footwear, the range includes sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker, and fashion press mentioned loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall. Coach also runs Coach (Re)Loved, launched in 2021 and said to cover trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces, plus Coachtopia, a circular-design sub-brand launched on 20 April 2023.

Buying Coach: Stores, Coach Outlet and Online

The largest flagship stores go by the Coach House name, and each full-price coach store offers the current collections. Another Coach House, at 645 Fifth Avenue, has been reported as targeted for 2027, following the New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue, which reportedly opened in 2016. London’s Coach House on Regent Street also opened in 2016, and in the UK the brand sells through Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis as well. Anyone looking for a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket from the latest season can find it in the full-price range.

As Coach’s own official channel, Coach Outlet operates both outlet stores and an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website. In 2014, Coach’s head of investor relations was quoted as saying roughly 85% of outlet merchandise was produced for the outlet channel, but that figure is now dated, and Tapestry has since discussed bringing some full-price product into outlets. The public evidence falls short of supporting assertions that outlet bags are always worse, or exactly the same as boutique bags. In the UK, shoppers can find outlet stores at Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet. People searching for the brand may type “couch” or “cosch”; so check that any site promising steep discounts is really Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
